School has begun

Classes have started, and it seems like free time has sort of disappeared. This explains the dearth (lack) of blog posts, as well as the big slow down in my pleasure reading. This is looking to be a good, but busy semester--two Spanish classes (to finish off my minor), two biology classes (physiology and infection & immunity) with a pre-med internship (I go shadow doctors) and a careers in microbiology class to top it all off. This semester's tests started off on a very positive note--I happened to ace my physiology test today. I'm counting my blessings.

With all of this business, I'm looking in to how to keep my life organized and keep from getting swamped. One of my tricks that I picked up a few semesters back is to use Google Calendar to keep track of classes, assignments, and other important things. Each class gets its own color code, I can drag and drop things if due dates change, etc. I delete assignments as I finish them, and it helps me stay on top of things.

Another thing that I'm trying for the first time is to use an index card as a to-do list. I throw it in my back pocket and use it to keep track of (non-school assignment) things I need to get done and any random important information I need. Once I get most of the things checked off and/or the card gets super hashed, I swap it for a new one, copying over things that still need to be done. I've liked it so far, except that I lost the first card that I made. Not so handy if I lose the card.

What do you do, oh faithful blog readers, to stay organized and keep track of all the crazy things going on in your busy lives? Any thoughts on how I can improve my system?

Actually, I think this is a fantastic way to be organized. You're doing a great job. Side note: I couldn't help laugh at your using "dearth." Caleb and I had about a 10-minute discussion on the spelling of that not-often-used word just the other day.

I use google calendars pretty extensively. A lot of my major's classes follow a "core" structure, so 4 of my 5 classes this semester have mostly the same people in all of them. So I got together a band of organizing people, and we all cover one class to start off, make the calendars public, and then we all keep them up-to-date, and anyone else in the classes are invited to join. It does an amazing job of sharing work that everyone would have to be doing otherwise.

so that works there.

And now that I've got an iPhone, I can see all the calendars from anywhere, and I have a todo list there that I use in about the same way you do yours, except without the losing it bit (that would really be tragic...)

I use "to-do lists", and they've been a great organizing system for me. I keep my list in my wallet (I'm less likely to lose it then in my back pocket). For big to-do's, ie: long term projects, i keep those written down in a spiral bound notebook.
Spenc always laughs at my list, but they keep me sane, and i feel productive and happy when i check them off!

Nancy, I think I'm the same way. There's something amazingly satisfying (and maybe a little OCD) in checking off a box...

Congrats on your physiology test! Looks like a great way to stay organized! I would have loved having that kind of thing when I attended college.

For my simple life a simple daily "to do" list on a piece of paper works for me. I also use a wall calendar to keep track of important things and make a note of them on my daily list. It is a good feeling to be able to check the items off as they are accomplished.

Wow, those are great tips! I just use Outlook, which is probably the same thing as Google Calendar.

On a side note, my last son told me the other day that he uses Outlook, too, to keep track of his soccer practices and such. He has an old computer in his room that has a few games on it, and, apparently, Outlook.

HE'S EIGHT!!!

I got a chip put in my head so I would never forget anything. The only down side is that once the Robot Uprising starts, I have to join. Oh well
